Keeping the local community informed is an important part of any exploration program.

The Exploration code of practice: community consultation was published by the Division of Resources and Geoscience (DRG) on 1 March 2016 following extensive public and industry consultation. It is applied by a condition on all titles issued after this time.

This code of practice sets out the mandatory community engagement requirements for exploration activities under a prospecting title and provides guidance for title holders planning and undertaking exploration activities.

The code of practice enables industry to:

  • adopt a risk-based approach to ensure compliance with mandatory requirements related to community consultation
  • commit to measurable performance standards
  • monitor performance and take corrective action if outcomes are not being achieved
  • keep and maintain relevant records of activities and/or actions.

This approach allows title holders to adopt innovative solutions and best practice techniques to meet performance requirements.

The Guideline for community consultation requirements for exploration is applied by a condition imposed on coal and petroleum prospecting titles issued prior to 1 March 2016. This Guideline was updated to reflect the minimum requirements outlined in the Code of Practice.

Community consultation requirements for minerals exploration titles issued in respect to applications received prior to 1 March 2016 may be imposed through a condition on the title requiring the establishment of a Landholder and Community Liaison Program.

Some simple templates have been prepared to assist in the identification of community and community groups, recording enquiries and complaints and reporting community consultation actions:
