The aim of the Assessment Coordination Unit is to facilitate the ecologically sustainable development of the state’s mineral resources.

The Unit is responsible for:

  • Coordinating and leading the Division's technical and regulatory assessment into the development assessment process, including Significant State Development, Significant State Infrastructure and Integrated Development under the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act (1979).
  • Leading the Division’s engagement with mining operations, providing advice on known resources and general project development.
  • Providing resource extraction advice during the development assessment process.
  • Providing informed and independent mineral resource and mining advice to the Division, Ministerial offices, other government agencies, industry and community.
  • Leading the Conceptual Project Development Plan process for new mining proposals, or where there is a change to Life-of-Mine (LOM), Run-of-Mine (ROM) and/or product tonnes, or resource extraction area for existing operations.
  • Coordinating the Division’s technical advice for cessation of mining operations and associated relinquishment of title.
  • Leading Resource and Economic Assessments (REA) for new mining proposals, or where there is a change to LOM, ROM and/or product tonnes, or resource extraction area for existing operations.
  • Providing technical input into strategic resource projects and overall project development.
  • Coordinating the Extraction Plan and Subsidence Management Plan processes for underground coal operations.
