NSW Gas Plan: Implementation progress planWhat we've delivered

The NSW Gas Plan sets out a clear, strategic framework to deliver world's best practice regulation of the gas industry while securing vital supplies for the State.

Through a whole of Government effort, we have now completed all 17 actions, meaning that NSW is well positioned for the safe and sustainable development of an onshore gas industry.

In October 2015, the Government released an Implementation progress report on Gas Plan actions. At that stage, two actions were still in progress.

Since that date, the final two actions have been completed:

On 11 December 2015, IPART published its final report on benchmark compensation rates for gas exploration and production. This completed action 12 of the NSW Gas Plan. In addition, since 1 July 2016, gas companies in NSW have been able to apply to the Minister for Resources to establish a Community Benefits Fund. Action 13 of the Gas Plan was completed with this final component of the Community Benefits Fund framework being put in place.

Implementing the Chief Scientist and Engineer's independent review of CSG

The report Implementing the Final Report of the Chief Scientist and Engineer's Independent Review of Coal Seam Gas Activities (182 KB PDF) outlines the NSW Government's progress in implementing each of  the Chief Scientist and Engineer's recommendations as of October 2015.

As at October 2015, seven of the 16 recommendations were completed. An additional three recommendations were complete by mid-2016. Good progress has been made against the remaining six recommendations.

The Chief Scientist and Engineer's final recommendations were wide-ranging and provided a clear roadmap for the development of a world class gas industry that is safe and sustainable. The complex and thorough nature of the recommendations means that implementation will take time.

The Chief Scientist and Engineer's Final Report was welcomed by the NSW Government and all of its recommendations were supported. To implement these recommendations, a significant program has been outlined in the NSW Gas Plan.

The NSW Gas Plan is a clear, strategic framework to deliver world's best practice regulation of the gas industry while securing vital gas supplies for the State. The NSW Gas Plan uses the evidence and analysis provided by the Chief Scientist and Engineer to build a better scientific base for policy and regulation for the coal seam gas sector in NSW.
