The NSW Government is committed to ensuring that best practice environmental standards and working conditions are adhered to through robust regulation. This promotes an environmentally and socially responsible minerals industry, enabling it to participate in responsible sourcing initiatives for critical minerals.

Companies recognise the successful adoption of new technologies in power generation, electric vehicles and batteries depends on guaranteed long-term supply of key metals at stable prices. As a result, most responsible sourcing initiatives are voluntary and industry-led. To achieve their goal of responsible and stable supply chains these initiatives promote environmental stewardship and protection of human rights.

Critical minerals where there is a need to develop stable and responsible supply chains include:

  • cobalt.
  • copper and silver.
  • nickel.
  • rare earth elements.

NSW has strong regulation of the mining and exploration industry, seeking to promote compliance and enforcing it where necessary.  By focusing on business improvement through effective regulation and strong industry engagement and partnerships, the state is well placed to deliver on its mission to support industry to understand and fulfil their environmental and workplace health and safety obligations.
