The NSW Government recognises the potential economic value of developing the state’s natural gas resources and the benefits this can bring to regional NSW and the broader community in terms of clean affordable energy and supporting the manufacturing industry.

To ensure development can occur in an environmentally and socially responsible way, the government has introduced regulations applying to gas exploration and production. These are outlined in the NSW Gas Plan.

Part of the NSW Gas Plan was the introduction of a Strategic Release Framework for Coal and Petroleum Exploration (Strategic Release Framework) and the Preliminary Regional Issues Assessment (PRIA) process.
